Get Right With History by Stan Katz in Chronicle of Higher Education

October 4th, 2010

The August 3rd, 2010 Chronicle of Higher Education featured a Stan Katz article on the importance of studying history. Mr. Katz directs the Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, and his piece reminds us that “The Facts”, and their usage politically, are part of the dance of civilization (and its discontents.)

He wrote,

“The proper use of history is simply to enable us to contextualize knowledge in a sophisticated way. History in itself cannot and will not solve contemporary problems. But historical dispute, conducted in a well-informed, civilized manner, could indeed help an educated, democratic people, to conduct its affairs in a wiser and better way.”
